Description

Perform structural strength analysis for both flight and non-flight hardware. This work is in support of the Space Launch System (SLS) program as well as other new and existing programs from NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC).  Job duties include development of formal stress analysis packages for structural systems using strength of materials and finite element based methods, interfacing with design engineers to provide inputs to preliminary designs, development and delivery of reports and presentations to management, and collaboration with outside vendors and personnel from other NASA centers in the development of integrated flight hardware and Ground Support Equipment.   

Work Environment

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing. Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client.

Education and Experience Required

• BS degree (MS preferred) from an ABET accredited institution in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Civil Engineering, or Engineering Mechanics with an emphasis in structural analysis required. 

• BS degree and a minimum of 20 years applicable experience or MS degree and 10 years of experience or any equivalent combination of education/experience are required. 

• A minimum of 15 years’ experience in the broad application of finite element methods and the assessment of failure mechanisms such as rupture, yield, buckling, fatigue and fracture is required.  

• Experience with PATRAN, NASTRAN, ABAQUS, or ANSYS is required.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office products such as PowerPoint, Excel, and Word is required.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

• Familiarity with NASA is highly desired.
