DSI, a member of the NASA Ground Systems Development and Operations Program Safety team, supported Navy Diver Training on the Orion capsule at the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL) in Houston, TX. The NBL offers a unique opportunity to give divers exposure to the Orion capsule and the operations required to capture it following successful splashdown while maintaining a controlled environment.

Divers are trained on hazards that will be encountered during at sea testing and are also provided with the opportunity to work with recovery equipment planned for use during testing and development of the operations. This training also marked the 1st time in the NBL facility’s history where the pool area was darkened in order to simulate night time operations. DSI Safety accompanied the Recovery Director in order to provide unique insight into characteristics and proper hazard mitigation for the Orion capsule.
